Feeling incredibly content with the universe, I fiddled with the pastel blue index card that Vinnie had scrawled a note on.

Scoop,

Good morning beautiful. Didn’t want you to think I’d snuck out on you. We have drills this morning and afternoon before our game tonight. You should come! I’ll organize you a ticket again.

P.S. Last night was amazing.

The alarm on my phone blared, shocking me out of the third reread. I hit the stop button and forced myself to get out of bed. Staying focused in the shower was an effort, memories of Vinnie and me overpowering everything else, but I hurried through my routine and braided my hair since I didn’t have time to do anything fancy.

I threw on a fairly casual outfit—jeans and some layered shirts—before applying a little mascara and lipgloss. Jacket in hand, and beanie and scarf on, I filled the same backpack I had borrowed from Steph yesterday before gripping its handle and then heading to the door.

At the last second I grabbed a spare bed sheet and draped it over my arm before leaving and dashing down the stairs to the foyer. The cold had already managed to seep in through the gaps of the doors, but I waited until I reached the exit before putting on my jacket and then slipping on the backpack.

I took the scenic route to the arena this time, swinging by the Coffee Shop near the library and ordering a latte to go. Breakfast could come later.

Once I had my warm beverage, I made the last portion of the hike across campus doing my best to stick to the shoveled paths. My latte lasted until I rounded the final hallway corner to the female change rooms. All the regular smells of freshly cut ice, wet carpet, and dry air conditioning had nostalgia assaulting me, as it always did whenever I got close to a rink.

Maybe I could slip in a free skate today between the players training and the game…

…and the “plan.”

“Hayden?” Speaking of which, Tori’s sultry voice and the murmurs of female conversations snapped me from my musings.

“Hey, Tori! Are these your sorority sisters?” I asked, glancing around at the women who stood with her.

They were all beautiful in different ways and all had an intimidating air of confidence. These ladies all knew who they were and gave off the vibe that they didn’t care what others thought. Tori was clearly their queen bee, which made complete sense given what I knew about her.

“This is the girl that has Alderidge, Vanders, and Morello all twisted up?” one of the girls asked, her eyes scanning up and down my body.

I straightened my spine and raised an eyebrow at the outright perusal.

Tori, tilted her head to the side, joining in on the scrutiny. “Yep,” she responded with a slight pop to her P. A touch of confusion twisted her features.

“Huh, interesting.”

Interesting?

What the hell does that mean?

I opened my mouth to demand an answer
